Vastu Shastra is the Vedic study of architecture. It is a traditional Hindu system of design based on directional alignments. It is applied on home, temples, offices, industry, factory etc. Vastu is scientific concept practiced for the purpose of peace and prosperity. This approach is focused on driving more positive energy in a building and is particularly helpful in the area of happiness, prosperity, health and wealth etc. It tells us how to avoid diseases and disasters in life that are largely initiated by the negative energy surrounding us.

The pooja room should be in the east, north or north-east corner of the house. The pooja room should never be in the bedroom and not be made above, below or next to toilet or kitchen. All the material related to pooja room should be kept in the southeast of the room. Pooja room should always be on the ground floor and never in the basement. One should never use pooja room for any other purpose like store and never place any photographs of ancestors in the pooja room.

Vastu Shastra Vs Feng Shui

Vastu (Vah-stoo) was “created” in India many thousands of years ago, pre-dating the Hindu religion.  Ancient Vedic texts have described this Vastu Shastra philosophy and it is also known as “Vedic Architecture”. The Vedic texts are “records of the vibrations, or laws, of nature” and it’s according to these vibrations, that the ancients built their buildings.

In Vastu Shastra, buildings are to be oriented to the EAST (i.e. the FRONT ENTRYWAY of your space should face east) to be in accordance with the path the Sun travels daily. It is off of this main directive that the placement of all other rooms is based. Now, there are other “teachings” of Vastu (like the 3 schools of Feng Shui) which are based off of different family lineages, although they are not “formal” schools as they are referred to in Feng Shui.

Front door placement:
E = enlightenment
N=happiness & prosperity

Bed placement:
E and S is OK for the headboard to be placed

On a scientific, or “Western” note, neurologists have found that those studied who FACED EAST showed more coherence & cognitive activity! Heart disease, depression & anxiety are also being studied in terms of the affect direction has on the person and their recovery… VERY interesting!

Feng Shui vs Vastu Shastra

Feng Shui (compass & Black Hat Sect) use a Bagua Board to “activate” Life Areas and help determine spac-plan, color, accessory. The Compass School uses the person(s) & the building’s birth dates to determine good/bad directions & then orients the Bagua according to that…BHS does not. Bagua is oriented to the entryway of the space. Vastu only orients to the E, or in some cases N, cardinal direction. The “birth” dates of the space’s owners only comes into play when determining dates for various construction projects. Once the space is complete, then only the cardinal directions come into play.

Feng Shui is concerned with room AND furniture placement to help increase/decrease energy. Vastu only concerned with room placement w/in the space.

Feng Shui traditions state that the person’s intentions, emotions and activities play a part in their fortunes/health. Vastu takes the position that if the space is built according to Vastu principles, then good health/fortune will be had regardless of belief.

In Feng Shui, there are “cures” or “tweaks” as I call them, that you can apply to your space to create positive energy flow & make your space work for you. Vastu does not-it is either built accordingly or it’s not. Vastu is of the mind that it is better to tear down & begin again instead of “tweak”.

In BOTH traditions, proportion is important. Your own space, surrounding buildings/landscaping…all come into play to ensure proper energy flow.

BOTH are also concerned with the surrounding influences of the neighborhood-neighboring homes, noise, landscaping, water features…

You CANNOT use BOTH traditions in the same space. Although it has been done, you must be sure that the schools are compatible! Meaning, you could use the Black Hat Sect school of thought as long as the home lined up with the E for the front door. You could NOT use together if using the Compass School & you’re a “W” oriented person…Confusing, YES! Research, find a philosophy that corresponds to you, your lifestyle & values.

Vastu Shastra Brings Positive Energy to Your Home

Vastu Shastra is the Vedic study of architecture, which follows certain principles and is aligned with certain beliefs. It is akin to the Oriental belief of Feng Shui Decorating. Vastu rests on the conception that every living and non-living thing on Earth has a soul. And souls react to the magnetic forces covering the Earth. By following the Vastu Shastra principles people believe they stay in harmony with the cosmic energy, thus positively affecting their lives.

Interestingly, Vastu states that matter is made of five basic elements. They are earth, water, fire, wind and ether or vacuum. These elements can be recognized as the basis of many types of beliefs. The already mentioned Feng Shui is one of them, and the other is of course astrology that also has ‘fire’, ‘water’, ‘earth’ and ‘wind’ signs.

So, if one wants a house to aid in the general well-being, health, happiness and prosperity of its occupants, then House Vastu is one of the ways in which this can be done.

House Vastu dictates how your home should be built, what direction the doors and windows should open, what are the ingredients that should or should not be used in the construction of certain rooms, and what furniture should be placed where in the house. To sum it up, one can easily leave it upon Vastu to design and set one’s house!

The concepts of Vastu rely on the tenets that combination of aforesaid elements can be made to aid in one’s over all well-being in the world. Hence, advices may range from refraining to use river-mud while constructing one’s puja-room, or placing the bed in the bedroom in a North-South direction. And if a river flows in the vicinity of the house, then what should be the direction of the rooms and doors and windows.

While a number of Vastu instructions can be explained scientifically, some ambiguities remain, which can easily be credited to the long time-difference between the era in which it would have been created and the present age.

As can be seen, Vastu Shastra covers a major part of one’s lifestyle. And as it happens with every all encompassing subject, the followers of Vastu are many. Builders take care to follow the advice of Vastu-gurus before finalizing a design for any prospective building, as a considerable number of buyers and clients tend to follow Vastu Shastra.

The ancient science is so popular among some firm believers that it can become a matter of deciding upon the sale or rent of any major architectural construction. This makes Vastu a major mover of market and real estate dealings. All in all, Vastu Shastra is an important moving force in Indian architecture, and major parts of the clientele consider the Vastu-friendliness of the dealing.
